The walnut is one of the oldest trees in known human history, with references from Persia as early as 7000 BC., and its fruits belong to the dietary tradition of the Mediterranean, South America and Asia. In Greece the harvest takes place in late September and takes about 15 days, followed by washing with clean water and drying in the sun without chemical ways, so that all the nutrients that Mother Earth gives us remain intact.
The nutrients of Walnut include proteins, folic acid, a number of minerals (phosphorus, copper, magnesium and potassium), fiber, polyphenols, tannin and vitamin E. But what mainly distinguishes it from most nuts is its rich composition in polyunsaturated (and not only monounsaturated) fats and especially in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, such as linoleic and alpha – linolenic acid.
All of the above not only help to increase satiety and fullness, but also in the antioxidant armor of our body. Walnuts contain many bioactive ingredients with anti- cancer properties and are proven to help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides, with all that this entails for cardiovascular function. However, they are particularly beneficial for Brain Health, where their antioxidant action protects its function (memory and not only) and at the same time increases the levels of serotonin, the hormone that is linked to happiness by fighting depression.
